Geology Quest
Average trip length:
12 hours
Explore some of Arizona’s most incredible geological sites on our Geology Quest! The first stop takes you to a limestone sinkhole known as Montezuma Well. This active spring has a constant flow of 1,100 gallons of water entering at the bottom per minute and exiting through a side cave that empties into an irrigation ditch.
Our next stop is Sunset Crater, named by John Wesley Powell due to the way the colors fade to black on the volcano like a sunset. Students will learn about the youngest volcano in the San Francisco Volcanic Field. Sunset Crater erupted 1,000 years ago and completely changed the landscape and way of life for those in the area.
We will end the day touring Wupatki National Monument. Students will learn about the thirteen native American Indian communities associated with Wupatki as they tour the main building of 100 rooms, ball court, kiva, and blow hole.
